Golden Circle, Blue Lagoon and northern lights: the fifteen-hour day

Þingvellir. The rift valley where the North American and Eurasian plates pull apart, and where the Icelandic parliament was founded in 930. You walk between two continents, which sounds like marketing and is literally true.

Geysir. The geothermal field that gave the world the word. Geysir itself is mostly dormant; Strokkur next to it erupts every few minutes and is what everybody photographs.

Gullfoss. A two-tier waterfall dropping into a canyon, and in winter partly frozen with spray ice covering the paths. The best of the three.

The Blue Lagoon. Geothermal seawater at about thirty-eight degrees in a lava field. Touristy, expensive on its own, and genuinely pleasant after a day in the cold.

The aurora. On the way home, after dark, with whatever hours are left.

The aurora part of this day is real. The guide watches the sky and stops where it makes sense on the way back.

But you have been on a coach since morning, you have walked around three sites in the cold, and you have been in a hot lagoon. By eleven at night the group’s appetite for standing in a dark field is not what it was at nine.

More practically: a fifteen-hour itinerary cannot chase cloud. The route is fixed by the daytime stops and the return road. If the clear sky is two hours in the wrong direction, nobody is going there.

So book it as a very efficient day out with an aurora bonus. If the northern lights are the reason you came, book a dedicated evening as well — on your first night, so the free repeat still works.
